World Cup qualifier: Nigeria’s Super Eagles held to another draw with Zimbabwe

The Warriors of Zimbabwe held Nigeria’s Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw in their second World Cup qualifier on Sunday at the Huye Stadium in Rwanda.

The Super Eagles were under pressure after a disappointing draw against Lesotho last Thursday at Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

It was not the start they had hoped for, as Zimbabwe’s Musona beat Nigeria’s shot stopper Francis Uzoho with a brilliant 30-meter free kick in the 26th minute.

The 2013 AFCON winners, who were missing point guard Victor Osimhen and forward Taiwo Awoniyi, failed to make an impact on the game, with Zimbabwe emerging as the superior team at half time.

Jose Peseiro made three substitutions at halftime, replacing Ola Oina, Onyeka, and Nathan Tella with Victor Boniface, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Osayi-Samuel.

And Peseiro’s troops were suitably rewarded with an equalizer in the 67th minute from Iheanacho, who sent a ball just inside the left post.

Nigeria continued to press for the game-winning goal in the waning stages, but the Warriors held firm in defense.

Lesotho held the Super Eagles to a draw just a few days earlier in Uyo.
